About Family Court of Australia

The Family Law Courts comprise the Family Court of Australia and the Federal Magistrates Court and have concurrent jurisdiction in Family Law. The Family Law Courts is a combined registry to better service clients in family law across both Courts and to share resources in ways that optimise cost-efficiency in administering family law. Registry services include client services for parties filing in family law; records management; administrative support and dispute resolution services that assist some clients to achieve resolution of their dispute without requiring a final hearing before a Judge or Federal Magistrate. To achieve its outcomes, the Family Law Courts provide a range of services, integrated within a case management environment and encompass: Dispute resolution services, and Judicial determination of litigated matters. Operational management is devolved to registries where managers work closely with Judges and Federal Magistrates to deliver court services to families in dispute. The Courts' function has evolved as a result of reforms to the Family Law system which took effect on 1 July 2006 and included the establishment of the Family Relationship Centres. Since this time, the Federal Magistrates Court has managed the higher volume of family law cases while the Family Court has focused on the most complex disputes.
